David Hale was the founder of Chicago-based David Hale Global Economics and a global economist. He was an advisor to investment management companies and multinational companies in North America, Europe[1], Asia, Australia[2] and South Africa on global economic trends.[3][4] He died in October of 2015.

Additionally, Hale was the founding chairman of China Online.[5]

Background

Hale previously founded a company called Hale Advisors, LLC and the current company still does business as Hale Advisors.[6]

Before starting his own firm, Hale was the global chief economist for Zurich Financial Services Group.[7] There he advised the group's fund management and insurance operations on the economic outlook and a wide range of public policy issues.

He joined the group following its acquisition of Kemper Corporation, where he had served as chief economist.

In September of 1990, Hale was conferred with the William F. Butler Award by the New York chapter of the National Association of Business Economists. This award is conferred annually by the society upon a business economist who has made an outstanding contribution to the field.[8]

Hale was a member of both the National Association of Business Economists and the New York Society of Security Analysts.

His writing on economic affairs has appeared in broad range of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, The Far Eastern Economic Review, The Financial Times of London, The New York Times, The Nihon Kezai Shimbun, The Australian Financial Review, The Harvard Business Review, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, National Interest, and other publications.[9]

Hale was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority as well as a variety of government and private sector economic policy research groups in Washington, Tokyo, and Berlin. He was also recently appointed to the Competitive Markets Advisory Council of the CME Group.

Also, Hale kept a close relationship to his native state of Vermont and served on advisory boards in its state government, including the Council of Economic Advisors. He was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in both New York and Chicago, and a long-time member of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue.

Education

Hale held a bachelor's of science degree in international economic affairs from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a master's in science degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.
