John J. Mack is a senior advisor and the former CEO & chairman of the board at Morgan Stanley.[1] He retired as CEO effective Jan. 1, 2010 [2] and stepped down as chairman at the end of 2011. James Gorman succeeded him as CEO and chairman. [3][4]


Before he was elected chairman and CEO in June 2005, John Mack had spent nearly 30 years at Morgan Stanley in various positions, most recently as president, COO and a director.

Previously, Mack served as chairman of Pequot Capital Management, co-CEO of Credit Suisse Group and chief executive officer of Credit Suisse First Boston.


Mack is a graduate of Duke University, where he is a member of the board of trustees.


He serves as chairman of the board of trustees of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the University Hospital of both Columbia and Cornell, and as a trustee of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
