John McFarlane is non-executive director and chairman of Westpac Banking Corporation. He succeeded Lindsay Maxsted in that role on April 2, 2020.[1] McFarlane has more than 44 years’ experience in financial services.

Earlier, McFarlane was executive chairman of Barclays PLC. He was appointed to the board in January 2015 and became chairman in April 2015. He was previously chairman of Aviva plc, having joined the Aviva board in September 2011 and become chairman in July 2012. He is currently a non-executive director of Westfield Group and Old Oak Holdings Ltd, and was chairman of FirstGroup plc until July 2015.[2]

Background

From 1975 – 1993, McFarlane was head of UK and Ireland for Citibank UK/Citicorp. From 1993 – 1997 he was Group Executive Director at Standard Chartered plc (UK/HK).
