After graduating from college, Germain worked as a software engineer for IBM for over six years. He later stepped into the financial industry as a contract programmer working for investment banks. He has had experience working with HSBC, Citi, Barclays, Merrill Lynch and RBS. 
Germain graduated from Keble College Oxford with a degree in physics in 1985.
