He became a director of the stock exchange in October 1990 before assuming the chairman role in October 1994. He left the exchange in 2008.
A graduate of Sydney University, the English-born Newman has spent more than 40 years in stockbroking and investment banking, and held a number of high-profile company directorships and government advisory posts. He was chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 2000-2004, and returned to the company as a director in 2006.
His financial career saw him become a managing director of Deutsche Bank Australia in 1984, and he served as executive chairman of the bank's country business from 1985-1999, and as a director of Deutsche Bank Asia-Pacific from 1999-2001. He was chairman of Acrux, the Australian pharmaceutical group, from 1999-2003.
