Michael O'Brien is head of product management for SMARTS Trade Surveillance at NASDAQ OMX. He arrived at NASDAQ in 2010 when the exchange group acquired SMARTS, a privately-held surveillance technology firm based in Sydney, Australia. In this role, Michael is responsible for the expansion of SMARTS Broker’s product offering and business development programs, as well as driving product development to keep pace with market structure and compliance initiatives.
O'Brien joined SMARTS in 2003 and headed the firm's sales efforts for SMARTS Broker, a managed service designed for brokers to ensure compliance with market regulations and internal risk policies. He previously spent three years at the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) in its market surveillance division.
In 1988, O'Brien earned a bachelor of commerce in finance and accounting from the University of New South Wales. In 2002 he received a bachelor of arts in communications from the University of Technology, Sydney.
