From 1974 to 1980 he was a director of public relations for the American Red Cross chapters in Chicago and Cincinnati, OH and taught crises communications and fund raising for the American National Red Cross organization.

Carmichael is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and served as president of the Chicago chapter in 1987/88. He also served on its board of directors from 1981-1989.[1]
